A few years ago, Skillshare shifted its focus to learning skills for the creative type and now offers a world of educational content that can benefit your career, satisfy your hobbies, or help innovate. Many courses have additional materials, such as worksheets and readings, as well as an interactive community space where students can share their work and interact with each other. How much does Skillshare cost?
Skillshare offers a free version with a limited selection of courses. At the time of writing, the cost of a premium membership is 7,167.88 per year. You won't see the price unless you create an account and want to upgrade, but people in some markets outside of the US may see a much lower price. Skillshare also offers team accounts for groups, costing 9,159 per year.
The free version gives you access to a small selection of video lectures and their related content, such as PDF workbooks and community discussions. You can watch introductory videos for any class, but you won't be able to access most of them otherwise. In testing, I had a hard time figuring out what classes were available to free users, which was frustrating.
A premium membership unlocks the full catalog of courses and allows you to download classes on the Skillshare mobile app for offline viewing. When you pay for an annual subscription, you get discounts from affiliates like Adobe Software, Squarespace subscriptions, Society6 products, and more.
Skillshare Teams is equivalent to a premium annual subscription to Access, but is designed for organizations that want to manage Skillshare accounts for their employees or members.
How much do other learning sites cost?
The cost of online learning is all over the place, with prices changing all the time. Skillshare's current pricing is fair, although we would prefer Skillshare to offer a monthly subscription option, rather than just an annual one.
By comparison, MasterClass starts at $180 per year with no monthly subscription option either. LinkedIn Learning costs $29.99 per month or $239.88 per year. Khan Academy is totally free. It is a non-profit organization and you can donate to the site if you want to support it monetarily.
Other sites that offer more practical skills training, such as Coursera, Udacity, and Udemy, offer some courses for free, while others cost between $40 and $400 per month.
What's inside Skillshare?
Let's see what Skillshare offers. Generally speaking, the site is classified into three categories: create, create and improve.

When that's the case, students share their creations with other people who have taken the class, usually in a comments section for the course. Some teachers stick around to give feedback on student work or answer questions, while others have evidently not logged in to the site in a long time.
Generally speaking, there are two types of courses: Skillshare Originals and classes created by individuals. When people create a class, they can earn money from it. More on that in a moment.
Skillshare Originals are courses produced by Skillshare. Some are co-created with partners, like Mailchimp, Patreon, and Eataly. They may have famous or semi-famous instructors, and the quality of the production is guaranteed to be high. An Original class almost always contains multiple videos of about 8-10 minutes each, clearly labeled and meant for you to watch in order. Because the videos are quite short, you can watch them intermittently, pausing and resuming the class as needed. This structure making it possible to set your own pace.
To be fair, the best user-created content classes are structured in a similar way: short, sequential, and clearly labeled. Since we started reviewing Skillshare, the company has started auditing user-created videos and pulled those that don't meet Skillshare's quality standards. There are still hundreds of classes in the service. You can correctly know that they are good because they got high marks from students and many students signed up for them.
While you, the student, may never know how much work went into creating a class, the best ones clearly follow a detailed outline, but don't force the instructor to read word for word from a script. The best instructors know where the lesson is going and can get there in an authentic way. It's a far superior structure to the scripted style of most classes on LinkedIn Learning, where too many instructors have a presence on an overly corporate and sometimes robotic stage.

To use Skillshare, create an account and select a few areas of interest so the site can assign classes.
You can search for classes by browsing topics, looking at recommended or popular classes, or using a search engine. When you find an interesting tutorial, you can save it for later reference. Your account stores and tracks all the courses you subscribe to, and you can customize them in the playlist.

The discussion section is where students can post questions and ask each other for feedback. The best part is that sometimes a Skillshare teacher comes in and answers. The syllabus is useful for students who need feedback and measures the progress of other students.

Like I said, every Skillshare tutorial comes to work to complete. In this section you will find a detailed description of the activity as well as other resources shared by the teacher. Students are encouraged to share images (and optional text) of their work where they can receive feedback from their peers and teachers.
Transcripts
I also learn well when I read what I hear. That's where the transcript section comes in handy. Not only that, but going back to the reference section where the instructor explained the details or listing the descriptions makes the transcription section a very useful app.
